The Train Of Two Cities

One of the things that I am going to deal with, in Shanghai, is the the issue of transportation. This is due to the fact that it is just impractical and to expensive to have a car in China.

So this leaves me with a few possible alternatives. These are;

  • Uber / Taxi
  • Bicycle
  • Walking
  • Train

Over the past month I have been travelling a lot by train in both Australia and Singapore. From my understanding the MRT in Singapore is very similar to the MRT in Shanghai.

So, today I have been trying to wrap my head around the Shanghai MRT system using the app METROMAN. I actually love this app as it gives you directions, times, durations of trips, maps, and even the cost of the trip.

One of the biggest differences I have noticed between Australia and Shanghai trains is the costs of tickets. I recently caught the train from the Gold Coast to Altandi station which is approximately about an hour trip and cost me $15.60. Another trip I took was from Sunnybank station to Central station which cost $5.80 for about a 40 minute ride. When compared to the Shanghai system of similar distance and duration of the Gold Coast to Altandi trip the cost was ¥5, which is approximately $1.05 Australian.

The thing I love about Singapore is just how clean the trains are. As the t-shirt says it is a FINE city. I wonder if Shanghai trains will be the same way.
